GermanyPlanned cutsOfficial development assistance and humanitarianBudget
On September 11, 2024, the German Parliament launched negotiations on the 2025 federal budget. The draft budget plans to cut the budget of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by 836 million euros (about 925 million US dollars), about 12%, including a reduction of 47% in humanitarian aid funds. The draft budget also plans to cut the budget of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) by 937 million euros (about 1 billion US dollars), about 8%.
German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulze expressed frustration with the budget cuts. Svenja Schulze said that most of the 2025 budget has been locked in long-term agreements, leaving little room for maneuver. As a result, short-term projects and multilateral funding may be shelved, and non-governmental organization-related budgets may also be affected. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also said that the current budget level is not enough to cope with numerous global crises.
